MSc RENE is ideal for top-performing students with entrepreneurial and innovative talent who want to meet renewable energy challenges and contribute to building globally a new low-carbon economy.


MSc RENE is aimed to engineers with entrepreneurial spirit and creativity skills willing to develop a professional career in innovation in renewable energy by developing new concepts, products, services and business opportunities. MSc RENE provides also good opportunities for those willing to start a research career by enrolling a PhD programme within the KIC InnoEnergy partnership.

Career prospects

MSc RENE graduates are highly eligible for careers in renewable energy. They are employable within a wide range of industries and are well equipped to start their own innovative businesses and to provide strong leadership in many areas of the renewable energy sector.

Thanks to the strong partnership between universities, innovation centres and energy companies, RENE graduates can pursue many opportunities; advanced research and innovation, industrial management, and designing and implementing strategic energy policies for manufacturers, business start-ups and public organizations worldwide.

EU students are not required to pay participation costs. KIC InnoEnergy offers them a waiver. KIC InnoEnergy also offers scholarship opportunities covering cost of living.

Non-EU Students are required to pay participation costs of € 8000 – KIC InnoEnergy offers scholarship opportunities covering participation costs and cost of living.

Programme outline

YEAR 1:

Engineering courses

This block is built up with courses in advanced technology concepts and methods, as well as in sustainable energy production and utilization 

Transversal courses 
The transversal courses include training in entrepreneurship, oral communication, team working, and economical and social issues, for mastering complex energy systems analysis.

The training credits in entrepreneurship will not be concentrated in a single course, but distributed along time in different training activities, starting in the first year and finishing with a business plan proposal in the thesis.

YEAR 2:

Courses on renewable energy engineering and specialization 
This block is defined by mandatory courses covering the background concepts in renewable engineering and elective specialization courses, e.g, in wind energy, solar photovoltaic, concentrated solar thermal power, hydro and ocean energy, and distributed power generation.


MSc Thesis

Mandatory internship in a company, or a research center/university. Shall demonstrate the entrepreneurship skills/competences acquired by the student during the programme. Thesis will be directly related with KIC InnoEnergy research & technology projects whenever is possible.

Mobility scheme Mobility is part of the KIC InnoEnergy educational and innovation strategy. Subsequently, the students will be the first year in one of the universities of the partnership and the second year in another one. This scheme makes possible that the students may choose for the second year the best university for the specialisation they take.

MSc Thesis Internship Supervised by a university professor at the year 2 hosting university.
  • For internships in companies or research centers, co-advised by a researcher of the hosting institution.
    • The topic must be agreed upon by the year 2 university professor and the hosting institution for the internship according to the local rules.
  • For internships in universities, it is strongly encouraged thesis projects being performed with industrial supervision, under an agreement between the university and the company.
  • The thesis will be supervised and evaluated according to the local procedures and regulations of the respective partner universities.
