About

The EIT’s Innovation Communities are partnerships that bring together businesses, research centres and universities.

The European Institute of Innovation (EIT) supports the development of dynamic pan-European partnerships between universities, research laboratories and leading companies to develop innovative products and services, create new businesses and train a new generation of entrepreneurs.

The Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) are private collaborative associations with legal personality (European Society) that bring together the main leading institutions in innovation, research and business creation in order to place Europe at the forefront of the so-called knowledge triangle (education, research and innovation) and in its transfer to the business, commercial and social context.

KICs carry out activities that cover the entire innovation chain: training and education programmes, reinforcing the path from research to market, innovation projects, as well as business incubators and accelerators. The role of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is to guide the process and set strategies, but it is up to the innovation communities to implement them and deliver results.

The Polytechnic University of Catalonia actively participates in the Knowledge and Innovation Communities of the first call, forming part of four consortiums within the prestigious EIT, created in 2008 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in order to strengthen European competitiveness and make Europe a world leader in strategic areas.
The UPC is an active partner of the following communities:

This participation is key for the UPC to strengthen networks and collaboration between its researchers and other European groups and trading partners. The networks support European Union project applications and help increase EU funding for universities.

In addition the close relationship that is formed thanks to KICs between academia and industry at European level drives:

  • Innovative products and services to be developed in every area imaginable, including climate change, healthy living and active ageing.
  • New companies to be started.
  • The development of education and training activities for new researchers and entrepreneurs.

Thus, the concept of KICs is based on the integration between research, education and innovation with entrepreneurship, in order to find solutions to major challenges in areas with great potential for innovation.

How does the UPC collaborate with the EIT network?

  • We connect students, researchers and entrepreneurs in the EIT Community network, bringing together more than 1000 partners from companies, higher education institutions and research organisations from different cities and countries.
  • We inform about the opportunities offered by the EIT that can serve as an impulse to turn innovative ideas into reality.
  • We promote projects in the EIT community.
  • We support in any phase of the activities carried out by the EIT groups so that they can be part of the movement that allows innovation in the different fields and create the entrepreneurs of the future.
