Challenge Based Innovation(CBI) is a four-month project-based course, where multidisciplinary student teams and their instructors collaborate with researchers at CERN to discover novel solutions for the future of humankind. The projects are an elaborate mixture, where societal, human-driven needs meet research at CERN, guided by the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this CBI student cohort for 2019, student teams from ESADE Business SchoolIstituto Europeo Design (IED) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) have explored, prototyped and tested ideas connecting UN Sustainable Development Goals and CERN Knowledge and/or Technology.

The Gala will introduce the proof-of concept prototypes the eight student teams have developed to answer a wide range of societal challenges, inspired by people and research at CERN.

CBI Fusion Point this year is tackling UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, with a focus on Urban Mobility. Using the UN SDG 11 as a guide, as well as the priorities set by the 12 city partners of the EIT Urban Mobility initiative, the teams are tackling four identified core societal challenges: 1) Accessibility; 2) Transition Management & Inclusive Urban Planning; 3) Pollution; 4) Space Allocation.
