Technology Concept





Planta_solar.pngTo address technological key challengest and enable technology transfer in the field of sustainable energy InnoEnergy has designed a complementary technology concept. The main tasks of the technology concepts are:

  • Substantiating of the thematic positioning of InnoEnergy by the definition of thematic priorities
  • Alignment with the European goals for 2020 as formulated by the Strategic Energy Technologies (SET Plan)
  • Selection of cross disciplinary lighthouse innovation drivers
  • Selection based on pre-defined criteria of KIC projects with a strong innovation potential.

The underlying conviction of the technology concept is that the European energy system needs to be approached as a whole in order to achieve a system change towards sustainability. InnoEnergy will on short to medium term serve the 2020 goals of the SET Plan in its entirety.


Accordingly, innovation projects are selected with sufficient critical mass to have maximum impact on the realisation of the SET Plan. At the same time, InnoEnergy will anticipate the 2050 goals of the SET Plan, investigating disruptive technologies and new services. Higher risk taking and a different entrepreneurial culture is required to accelerate innovation and to significantly shorten the period from development to deployment.


The technological concept ensures full integration of education into the innovation projects in order to create the fertile ground for the entrepreneurial talent to thrive. According to the capacities, competences, and complementarity of single CCs a programming process has started to define the thematic priorities in line with the above-stated conviction.


Each CC takes over the responsibility for a set of innovation and technology projects within a defined thematic priority. All projects are open to other KIC partners and, despite one CC being responsible for one thematic area, the guiding principle will be to bring together the best actors from the field and to attract top talents. In order to ensure the alignment of the thematic priorities and to use synergies between the thematic priorities lighthouse innovation drivers were identified. These “framework projects will focus on horizontal topics as innovation drivers. The topics touch on various industry lines, have great potential for innovation and business opportunities and on completion will have a high socioeconomic impact. The following figure summarises the result of the programming process.



The vertical boxes in the picture show the responsible CC as well as the SET Plan objectives and the corresponding programmes headed by the CC. The horizontal direction presents the first defined lighthouse innovation drivers which have been designed in order to integrate the defined programmes horizontally and to use the synergies.


1) “EXPLORE – Small Scale Energy Source Flexible Polygeneration” launches educational ventures with the business community, in particular SMEs. This Innodriver outreaches to the sustainable energy needs of in particular emerging economies, to create various interconnected small-scale energy systems in a significantly more energy efficient manner by using local sources.


2) The potential for innovation in the energy sector is in particular strong on the consumer side, where the increase of energy efficiency is a crucial target. Equipment and Processes for Industry Energy Efficiency will identify key processes and technologies that substantially reduce energy consumption, convert energy sinks into sources and increase the competitiveness of the industry sector.


3) The Energy System Assessment Agency “ESA2” is a start up of InnoEnergy, addressing the needs of industry and governments by offering consulting services and commercializing the knowledge potential of the entire KIC. Energy system analysis is crucial for the choice and development of future technologies and systems, in order to enable a comprehensive and holistic approach, avoiding sub optimization.


4) Converging Technologies “ConTeNT” is an innovation accelerator where different technologic advances evolve independently and mutually towards serving similar and common needs, sharing the methods to expand creativity and skills to face complex challenges differently, leading to a spurt of new products and services.
